In 2004 Ost & Kjex’s first album ‘Some But Not All Cheese Comes From the Moon’ was nominated for best electronica album at the Norwegian Grammys.

In the blessed summer of 2008 the two boys from Norway stumbled upon
Hamburg based Croatian Solomun. A lucky meeting resulting in a
collaboration track called “Federgewicht” (Featherweight). It was
released on Solomun’s label Diynamic in October 2008.

Right after this, Ost & Kjex were also featured on the first Diyanamic compilation “Saturday I’m In Love”.

Within the release of their second album ‘Cajun Lunch’ in 2010 on
Diynamic the boys fixed their very unique sound. They also did a
cooperation with Jamie Jones called Summertime and are currently working
on a cooperation with dOP.

Their love for electronic music still takes the boys through the world
churning out theatrical performances and fucked-up live sets for the
dance floor.

AGORIA

Ten years since his debut and critically acclaimed album release, ‘Blossom’ on PIAS recordings, Agoria is still growing and has become a true pioneer of his style, creating an original epic metamorphosis of dub and acid that takes techno beyond where it started.

His three consecutive albums (‘The Green Armchair’ 2006, soundtrack ‘Go Fast’ 2008 and ‘Impermanence’ 2011) elevated him to cult status and Resident Advisor named his ‘At The Controls’ release in the top 20 best of the decade (2000-2010). His production techniques have collided with an army of notorious artists including Tricky, Neneh Cherry and Ann Saunderson.

Agoria cares more about the music than titles. A student of cinema school he recently created FORMS, a visual and conceptual installation where the DJ is just an element of the show – the motor of the music – engulfed in a vast structure submerged in mapping video, images scripted and graphic composing. FORMS takes us to the heart of the industrial world; to the absolute essence of electronic music, its architecture and history.

Watch FORMS

As one of the founders of Nuits Sonores festival in his hometown of Lyon, he takes a shamanic approach to creating the perfect environment for the music. Born out of a repression of the city’s nightlife, the Nuits Sonores festival has eclipsed its rebellious roots to become one of the most celebrated for its music and integration with the Lyon community featuring DJ workshops for children and taking place in beautiful historic buildings.

Sebastian Devaud AKA Agoria grew up in rural France. His father was an architect and his mother a Spanish and classical teacher. His name evolved from the name of an event series he started as a teenager, Agora, loosely meaning ‘meeting place’ in ancient Greek.

Agoria’s dextrous production skills are sought out from the worlds of film and fashion such as with his soundtrack for the film ‘Go Fast’ produced by Luc Besson and directed by Olivier Van Hoofstad. He is now a music director or the high-end French label Courrèges and recently produced the first album from female singer Kid A who featured on his last album.

In 2011 he delivered an episode of the fabric mix series, one of their most successful to date. In the same year his album, ‘Impermanence’ featuring Carl Craig and Seth Troxler came on his own notorious InFiné label. Started in 2006 as a “laboratory” that followed no rules, shied away from trends and featured young and new talents from various parts of the world, InFiné is now part of Agoria’s past as he left to concentrate on new musical directions, projects that will be announced before the end of 2012.

In between these roles he manages to maintain and enjoy over 100 gigs a year that take him throughout Europe, USA, Asia, South America and to some of the most cutting edge cities of the world. His favourite place is Japan for its food, idiosyncrasies and humorous nature. A true Frenchmen, he knows to share and to laugh are the key ingredients to a good life.

UMLAUT (BE)

The umlaut characters are created on a computer by using ASCII key sequences. Holding the “Alt” key down whilst typing in the code for the required character.

Unless you still believe in fairy tales, we could tell you to hold “Alt” and David and Johan would appear to tell them their biography themselves… But we won’t do that.

April 2011. After living for almost a year in a country without a government, rules or any ethics, Umlaut sprouted as the brainchild of electronic music madmen David Gorez and Johan De Vylder. While both of them already played alone for many years, they felt it was time for someting new, something fresh! Umlaut was born.

David and Johan both started playing records around 1998 and stood behind the decks at many clubs and venues in Belgium and beyond the borders. David as dj Nocif, Johan as Juannes. They first met in 2006, as Johan organised his Plus/Minus events where he invited David to play. Since then they never lost contact and shared their mutual interest, music and parties, with Brussels as a central meeting point. Juannes became resident of the infamous P3P parties in Brussels and played as a regular guest at Fuse club Brussels, Kozzmozz, Ultra in Gent and Tomorrowland. Nocif played as a resident for Bombomatic, Technoir and Artfact, while playing twice at Laundry Day and having a spot at the 10 years Kozzmozz party. Next to that he went abroad in Germany and twice in Switzerland.

Inspired by all different styles of electronic music, you can expect a musical voyage from soft house music to harder techno music, going back and then forward again.
Always keeping in mind they don’t want to bring music for the masses, but cast pearls before the dancefloor swines.
Their only aim is to make you smile and keep you dancing all night, or at least during their set.

This belgian artist has been active in the globalized electronic music scene since 2000. DKA (Aka Doktor A). Influenced by the extense universe of electronic sounds and waves, DKA evolution has been marked by electro beats and hip-hop flows in time tied together with solid minimal-techno basses and deep-house feeling. DKA’s began to expose his talent to the public eye on the year 2002, when he spinned on several residences in small clubs, creating the Belgian concept « Exit & Private ». On 2006, DKA decided to embark on a new project that will refine his sounds and prepare hi for the next level; the creation of electronic music and studying a new career on audio engineer at SAE Brussels. Since then he has performed live in clubs, parties and radio programs where he mixed and presented his music productions. A full range that includes house, deep house, minimal, minimal-techno.

A few months later, they decided to join forces, combining the deep techno and house background from raph to the twist it dancefloor science. Thanks to their residency at the infamous OPUS parties and the excellent echoes of their sets at brussels’ parties (In Wonderland, Audiorama to name a few), they recently played in Paris and at Café d’Anvers.

SETH TROXLER (US, Visionquest)

Through a leaking bodily cavity resembling the pork found in Chinese restaurants, Satan shat out a crystal beaming with glowing red embers. This crystal matured into the fetus of Seth Troxler. Seth was placed on earth as a weeping fetus, the sound of inevitability. As he grew, his ancestral roots took on a magnetic channeling power, more than his feeble mind could ever consciously fathom. As a result, he became capable of creating some of the world’s finest and most intuitive dance cuts, including releases and remixes on Spectral, Wagon Repair, Crosstown Rebels, M_nus, Bpitch Control, Circus Company, Items and Thing, Raum… Musik, FXHE, Esperanza, Leftroom,Adults Only and Beretta Grey. His music has been featured on Audions Fabric mix, The Circo Loco 10 comp mixed by Arpiar, and Matthew Dears new Get Physical compilation.

Seth’s DJ career started in Detroit in 2002 at the age of 16 as a frequent Dj at Detroit club The Works and as a clerk at Detroit’s famous Melodies and Memories record store. With these experiences Seth gained a preternatural understanding of rave, and dance music history, that now allows him to conjours up mixes and tracks like Botticelli conjoured his Venus. He has played many outstanding international gigs, notably Fabric, Tenax, MUTEK, , Panorama Bar, Watergate, Robert Johnson, Detroit Electroinc Music Festival, The Rex, Fuse, Avalon and The End Up. As well as being a resident at Berlin’s legendary Club der Visionäre. Seth is also a bi monthly party host, and resident DJ at Berlin Weekend Club, and Cityfox’s new club Alte Borse in Zurich, w/ friends Ryan Crosson and Shaun Reeves. Before relocating to Berlin he was also a key conceptual force behind America’s “Tesh Club” parties with partners in crime Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss. Under the name Visionquest, they have hosted the annual “Need is Say More” (old miami) party which has become DEMF’s most anticipated after hours since it’s conception 2006.

His influences include the chirping of crickets, the whirring of space ships, and the sweet sounds of whistling voodoo magic. However, Seth draws the majority of his inspiration from Robert Downey Jr., and the idea of releasing the shackles that bind Downey so he can finally do heroin in peace. Also seth enjoy’s cooking, long walk on the beach and candle lit dinners.

ELLEN ALLIEN (DE, Bpitch)

Like a lot of dance music producers, Berlin’s Ellen Allien has had her hands in just about every aspect of her field. Allien’s immersion into dance music began during an extended stay in London, at the height of the acid house phenomenon. Shortly after returning home she got into DJing, and by 1993 she had spun at Fischlabor, Tresor, and a number of other significant clubs. Throughout the remainder of the ’90s, she hosted programs on Berlin’s Kiss FM, worked at the Delirium record shop, operated a label called Braincandy, and threw a number of parties called BPitch Control, which led to her label of the same name. She became a noted producer and issued a series of full-lengths – Stadtkind (2001), Berlinette (2003), Thrills (2005) and together with Apparat Orchestra of Bubbles (2006).

GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS live (CAN, Circus Company)

Forever with his thumb cocked looking for the next creative thrill ride as the sun goes down, Guillaume Coutu-Dumont’s music lends itself to the indigo hue of dusk, imbued with the sultry allure of jazz, the unquestioned groove of house, and the propulsion of techno.

As a solo producer, Guillaume was already causing atmospheric disturbances ahead of his debut album “Face À L’Est”, which appeared on Musique Risquee in 2007. Before the inception of his one-man band, Guillaume was moving and shaking with other protagonists via the Egg project with Julien Roy, Chic Miniature with Ernesto Ferreyra and Luci with David Fafard. All these projects share their history with the lauded Mutek festival, which Guillaume has been closely involved with since 2002.

After forging friendships with the Oslo Records and Raum Musik crews, Guillaume made a logical pilgrimage to Berlin in 2007. There has always been an undeniable leaning towards the soulful and the spiritual in Guillaume’s work, and even a move to one of the techno centres of the world could not shake him from a musical path that favours the organic, fundamental roots of dance music.

As well as his German brethren, Guillaume has a strong tie to the melting pot of the French underground house scene, having released music for Karat and eventually striking up a close working relationship with Circus Company. Fellow mainstay of the Parisian label Dave Aju can be found contributing to Guillaume’s latest venture, Guillaume Coutu Dumont & The Side Effects.

Taking the shape of a band proper, Aju has been coaxed into developing his considerable vocal talents, backed up by Nicolas Boucher on keys, Sébastien Arcand Tourigny on sax and Alexis Messier on guitar. With shows already performed in Montreal, Mexico, Switzerland, Barcelona, Poland, Zürich and Berlin, the band are loosening the programmed boundaries of Guillaume’s productions and opening it up to the improvisational potential of the live dynamic.

Beyond his achievements in modern beats, Guillaume has a rich and varied history of music experience, from percussion for a funk band to studies in Latin and classical percussion, a university course in electro-acoustic composition to years spent working in a Montreal studio, not to mention [iks], a contemporary jazz formation which produced two albums and a tour around Senegal.

Following the whirlwind of energy that has whipped up around Guillaume since those formative years, it feels impossible to predict where his turbulent creativity will fling him next. While many artists prefer to adopt a streamlined trajectory through their musical journey, Guillaume’s way is that of the carnival; wild and unrestrained but full of a positive, soulful exuberance. Along the way other characters get drawn into the party, sometimes shaping the direction it will take, but it is Guillaume’s unfaltering vision for what he wants to create that propels the parade.

http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/guillaume/

RYAN CROSSON (US, Visionquest)

Ryan Crosson makes house and techno inspired by the historical precedent set in his native city of Detroit and his adopted hometown of Berlin. His musical output is shaped by pioneering artists like Richie Hawtin, Kevin Saunderson and Moodymann in the US, in addition to European heavyweights like Pantytec, Ricardo Villalobos, and Thomas Brinkmann. Situated loosely between these two defining poles, alongside his partners in Visionquest: Shaun Reeves, Seth Troxler and Lee Curtiss, Ryan delivers a obsessive attention to the constant progression of his sound and embodies a ceaseless energy that carries itself from the studio directly into his live set and DJ performances. Whether it’s solo in the studio or as a guiding hand in the Visionquest label and DJ/production partnership, Ryan consistently chooses to steer away from the predictable circuit of so-called “underground” club hits, instead favouring a process of constant renewal, returning both to early influential material and to emerging sounds that depart from well-trodden trends. As a key member of Visionquest, Ryan is responsible for much of the concepting and day to day running of what has rapidly become one of dance music’s most cherished new labels. Between them, Ryan and his partners in Visionquest have honed a whole new landscape of lush, organic techno and more esoteric leftfield electronica, gambling against the predicable to introduce emerging talent like Tale Of Us, Maceo Plex, Footprinz, Laura Jones and Mathew Burton to the record buying public. Their efforts were rewarded when their label was voted number seven in Resident Advisor’s 2011 label poll, no mean feat given that it’s back catalogue has only recently hit double digits.

In the studio, Ryan’s production and sampling practices depart from the world of electronic music by accessing histories of sound, referencing musique concrete, 1970′s funk, and East African jazz. This is best demonstrated by the evolution of his sound from minimal hits like ‘Gotham Road’ and ‘Hopskotch’, through to the organic underground house strains of his ‘Visionquest’ remixes of Kiki’s ‘Good Voodoo’ and more recently via his Visionquest remixes of David Lynch’s ‘Pinky’s Dream’ and Guy Gerber and P Diddy’s forthcoming ‘Eleven Eleven’ project. In addition to dancefloor bombs like ‘You’ve Got Me’ EP on Supplement Facts he’s also capable of conjuring up the haunting cosmic beauty of his recent ‘Birds & Souls’ project on Spectral Sound alongside the genre-busting sonic experiments that make up his recent DRM album collaboration with Cesar Merveille released at the start of the year on Visionquest.

In the past Ryan has released tracks on diverse and groundbreaking labels like m-nus, Telegraph, Trapez, and Wagon Repair and more recently Soma, Spectral Sound and Supplemental Facts. From the outset Ryan immediately gave himself over to a life of touring and performance that keeps a steady focus on both the avant-garde aesthetics and deeply emotional bonds of dance music subculture. Ryan’s back-to-back live sets with Lee Curtiss, at the sold out Visionquest showcase at fabric last year and at Movement in Detroit, stole both these shows boding well for 2012 which will see him repeat his live show at some of the world’s most famous clubs and festivals alongside a packed schedule of DJ gigs, both solo and as part of Visionquest, including his much anticipated new residency at Circo Loco at DC10 this summer.

CESAR MERVEILLE (FR, Visionquest)

Cesar Merveille has long had an appetite for art, jazz, fine wines and good times, and his musical palate is equally refined. Yes, through flair and flow has the profile of this Parisian-born, Berlin-based “bon vivant” grown. Traversing styles from house and techno to Latin and tribal funk. From his uplifting ‘Chocopop Jazz’ track to the downbeat ʻMaayancholyʼ featuring Guti, which was remixed by Luciano and released on Cadenza. From recording for Circus Company, Safari Electronique, and Wolf + Lamb, to fusing grooves on Visionquest with label co-founder Ryan Crosson. Cesar’s sound is always evolving, always challenging, always turning heads – and it’s getting louder every year.

Cesar’s taste for music developed as a youth in his family’s home. He was drawn to jazz because of the countless ways musicians pushed boundaries to explore the genre, be it classical or experimental. By the age of 14 he was passionate about playing the guitar, later discovering electronic music through friends at Circus Company parties. Cesar began producing his own tracks while living in Paris, before moving to London in 2003, the same year as his debut release, ‘Transit’, came out on Circus Company. Graduating from London College of Communication with a degree in Graphic and Media Design, he then founded a visual design company called Hijackstudio. Yet it was Cesar’s impressive creative direction of music that would fling open the doors to his future. Sampling the Dave Brubeck Quartet 5/4 arrangement ‘Take Five’, he crafted (in the name of Cesar Maravillas) a more modern classic called ‘Chocopop Jazz’. This was released in 2008 on Remake Music and played out heavily by the likes of Luciano and Rhadoo. By this time Cesar’s reputation as a lively, versatile DJ was on the rise too. And after honing his craft during residencies at London’s T-Bar and lo*kee, he went on to captivate crowds at other spaces that were key to his evolution. Places such as London club fabric, and Watergate and Panorama Bar in Berlin. Over the years a flourish of new music formed an inspiring discography. He produced an EP on Safari that was remixed by Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves and Miss Fitz. He joined Cadenza to release the lush Descarga project, which was created along with his friend and former fellow T-Bar spinner Pablo Cahn-Speyer, and followed up swiftly by their Split EP. He also collaborated with Felipe Venegas on ‘The Builders’ for Drumma, and remixed Alex M’s ‘Moving the Sun’ for Monique Music. Not to mention what is probably his most poignant production to date, ʻMaayancholyʼ, starring Guti on piano, which was signed to Cadenza.

After near on a decade of living in London, Cesar moved to Berlin in 2011. From here he has been planning a debut album, a full-on mind meld made alongside Ryan Crosson. This builds on their recent EPs (DRM Part 1 and DRM Part 2), and likewise will be released on Visionquest. Besides this long player, several remixes lie ahead, including one for Reboot. While DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records promises to breath new life into the ever popular ‘Chocopop Jazz’. Also on the horizon is an original solo project for Cadenza and yet another summer of Balearic performance with the label’s Vagabundos family. Cesar will also continue DJing at other select events organised by Visionquest and Cadenza, as well as touring independently, sculpting a stream of gourmet sets for clubs and festivals around the world.

Yes, bon vivant Cesar knows how to live the good life and, thankfully, by virtue of his creative nous, it’s a passion and a feeling that he can share with us all!
